Virtual Field Trip

Topic: Renaissance Art, Architecture, and Sculpture

We are going to examine the art, architecture, and sculpture of the Renaissance by creating PowerPoint presentations..

Each group has been assigned a medium and a time period from these choices: Early Renaissance Art, Early Renaissance Sculpture, Early Renaissance Architecture, Late (or High) Renaissance Art, Late Renaissance Architecture, and Late Renaissance Sculpture. The members of each group are to become experts in their field, and share their findings to the rest of the class by creating a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation.

Each group will: 1. Give a brief introduction to your topic.

                         2.  Show at least three works using PowerPoint

                        3. Explain to the class the medium used (paint, plaster, etc), the narrative (what is happening), and any innovations used by the artist.  Also, consider these questions: who was the work created for?, who would the audience have been?, how long did it take the artist to create the work and what difficulties did he/she encounter while doing so?  how does the work represent a break from medieval (Gothic) art?,  and how does your work reflect the values of Renaissance Humanism?

A sampling of artists (you are not limited to these):

Early Ren- Giotto, Brunelleschii, Masaccio, Donatello, Jan van Eyck,

Late Ren- Botticelli, DaVinci, Michelanglo, Santi, Raphael, Bellini, Giorgione, Titian

Grading criteria: This assignment will be worth three homeworks.  Each group will be assessed according to this criteria- overall knowledge of subject area, accuracy of information, cohesiveness of presentation.
